Up Set is a manifestation of the time spent waiting together before the moment is fulfilled. A realisation of the elusiveness of the anticipated moment.

The equinox on 20 March is an astronomically exceptional moment in our world of discordant harmony: every year, at the same time, the relationship between night and day, shadow and light, is balanced. It is a cyclical moment, a celebration of the renewal of nature, the possibility of a new beginning, which can create a passage between cosmic and tangible forces, between non-human and non-divine existence.

How can this long-awaited equality between bodies and social roles manifest itself? How can any kind of balance be achieved when change is constant around and between us? Alongside these dilemmas, Up Set also seeks to answer the question of how the quest for equality can be sustained in the process of creating a dance collective and in the face of so many situations of contestation. How can collaborative work function in a cultural context in which the space for manoeuvre is severely limited, often impossible, and every step becomes uncertain?

Up Set is a site-specific performance that is a response to the impossibility of creating conditions. A demonstration against the paralysing power of vulnerability and its habituation. But it’s also a departure from the everyday into an aesthetic space, a world of frescoes and puttos. Standing out of the queue and standing up for each other. And it is also a challenge for the spectator, because in the performance the stability of his usual position is disrupted and the hierarchical comfort of theatrical contemplation is inverted. It is time to look to each other and upwards.

The AHA Collective is launching a new series of site-specific performances, which will consist of loosely structured events with different themes and more space for improvisation. Each performance will be titled „… Set”, of which three will be produced this year. The „Sets” will be smaller scale, more informal productions that are part of a larger whole.
In the series the collective is working with instant decisions and short but intense creative processes. The performances created are typically structured (pre-arranged, i.e.set), but within that, performers are present individually, with their own decisions and work on the given topic through improvisation. „Sets” are opportunities for the development of collective dynamics and help the AHA members discover creative and performative situations yet unknown.
